UMCG Laboratory

[ NUDUS ] The Central Laboratory for Diagnostic and Research at University Medical Centre of Groningen is located on the Northern edge of the Campus along the water ring. Since adaptive reuse of the existing building was not viable due to the intensive programmatic requirements, the design references the existing structures architectural language, form, and fenestration. The concept is to break down the building’s mass by creating a series of elements: three pavilions and a slab (bookend). Furthermore, the design strives to recover the historic campus ideals of space, light, and gardens. The setback horizontal masses and central courtyard create space for nature and softens the building’s landing. A new public square is created between the buildings and Binnenring, activated by a Horeca at the end of the standalone pavilion.
