The concept of this creative arts school stemmed from its relationship to the landscape of site. The design responds to the two natural conditions, the forest to the East and the sea to the West. The building navigates the threshold between land and sea. The building hinges at the entrance, folding in towards the hillside and opening out to the sea. A 20˚ grid shift creates enclosure towards the shelter of the forest and opening to the expansiveness of the sea. The structural grid is designed to provide maximum view shafts through the architecture out to the sea. Timber structural elements are designed to be expressed as an exoskeleton. In the large theatre, the spatial alignment contrasts with the structural grid. Calling attention to the mass timber structural elements overhead.
